BAY CITY, MI – United Bay Community Credit Union (Ubay), a proud member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis (FHLBank Indianapolis), has successfully obtained two Elevate Small Business grants of $20,000 each for local enterprises Petit 4 Bakery and Michigan Cream & Sugar Ice Cream Company.

Petit 4 Bakery, located in Essexville, MI, is renowned for its European pastries, wedding and special occasion cakes, and catering services. Owner Rachel Cathel plans to use the grant to upgrade the condensing units in their walk-in fridge and freezer. “The application process was easy to navigate. There were many materials to aid in the application and answer any questions that might arise,” Cathel noted. “Receiving the grant will allow us to invest less time and money into our current dilapidated units and focus on other upgrades, such as a new POS system and website, to help increase sales and reach more customers online.”

In Bay City, Michigan Cream & Sugar Ice Cream Company (registered as State Street Grill LTD) is known for its small-batch ice cream made from locally sourced ingredients, including all-natural Pioneer Sugar from Michigan Sugar Company and milk from family-owned dairy farms across the state. The grant will support an investment exceeding $200,000 in expanding their production facility. “Our participation in the Elevate Grant Program has been positive. The application process was very detailed and encouraged us to self-critique our plans to ensure we are on the right path,” said Pete Shaheen, President and Owner of Michigan Cream & Sugar. “This award will significantly impact our new production facility, leading to increased scoop shop locations, ice cream production, employment, and community impact.”

Shaheen also highlighted the vital role of General Manager and Chief Flavor Officer Tim Managan, acknowledging his contributions to the business. “The success of Michigan Cream & Sugar is due to the outstanding dedication of Tim Managan and our passionate team who enjoy making great artisan ice cream and having fun.” Managan, who has been with the company since its founding in 2020, is known for his innovative approach and commitment to the business’s growth.

Rebecca Emory, Business Department Manager at United Bay Community Credit Union, expressed pride in supporting these local businesses. “At Ubay, we love working with small businesses in our community, as it allows us to build meaningful relationships and directly contribute to the success of the local economy,” said Emory. “There’s something incredibly rewarding about helping these businesses grow and watching our community thrive together.”
