Celebrate culture and community at the 18th annual People’s Traditional Powwow

The 18th Annual People’s Traditional Powwow is scheduled for August 24–25, 2024, at the Seventh Generation Powwow Grounds.

MOUNT PLEASANT – The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe invites the public to join them for the 18th Annual People’s Traditional Powwow, scheduled for August 24–25, 2024, at the Seventh Generation Powwow Grounds, located at 7957 E. Remus Rd., Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858. This annual event promises a vibrant celebration of Indigenous culture through traditional dance, drumming, and food, and is open to people of all ages and backgrounds.

The powwow will begin with grand entries on Saturday, August 24, at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., followed by a special feast for all participants. The festivities will continue on Sunday, August 25, with another grand entry at 1 p.m. Admission is free for all attendees.

Throughout the weekend, guests can participate in various activities, including a corn eating contest and a hand drum contest sponsored by the Jackson Family. Additionally, Darryl and Theresa Jackson are sponsoring bike giveaways.

The event will be emceed by Jason Whitehouse, with Ray Cadotte serving as the Head Veteran and RJ Smith as Arena Director. The host drum will be Red Willow, and River Wild will act as the co-host drum. Invited drums include Sharp Feather and Southern Straight, with a $1000 drum split available for non-invited drums. Rezonance Productions will handle the sound, ensuring a high-quality auditory experience.

Each session will highlight the talents of the Head Dancers, who are selected for their exceptional skills in traditional dance. The 18th Annual People’s Traditional Powwow is set to be a significant and joyful celebration of cultural heritage and community spirit.
