MICHIGAN — The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is calling for applications from Michigan residents interested in joining the Michigan Racial Health Equity Think Tank (MiRHETT). This initiative aims to enhance support for the social care needs of marginalized and racially diverse communities through a collaborative, cross-disciplinary approach.

MiRHETT is part of the MDHHS Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) strategy and will focus on addressing and improving disparities affecting racial minorities. Participants will contribute their unique perspectives to help bridge gaps identified in the final reports of various advisory councils and task forces, including the Black Leadership Advisory Council and the Michigan Coronavirus Racial Disparities Task Force.

Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts: “Improving social determinants of health requires continuous and collaborative support with engaged community partners throughout our state. Innovative efforts like MiRHETT are essential to making our state more equitable for all.”

The Think Tank will involve virtual workshops, including educational sessions, coaching, and collaborative activities. Eligible participants include community foundation members, MDHHS leadership, community leaders, health specialists, and others with expertise in racial and health equity. Individuals from philanthropy, health care, public health, social sciences, policy, and community advocacy are encouraged to apply.

Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on August 23. The program will commence in September and continue through January 2025, requiring an estimated total commitment of 30 hours. Participants will engage in virtual meetings starting in August, with four foundational sessions scheduled.
