MICHIGAN — The Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s (MEDC) rebranded STEAM Ahead program is setting new benchmarks in supporting young talent. The program, formerly known as STEM Forward, has successfully funded over 570 summer internships in the first half of 2024, more than doubling its previous best from summer 2022.

Launched in 2021, STEAM Ahead enhances the original initiative by incorporating roles that blend arts with science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. This includes positions like front-end web developers and industrial designers. The program aims to address key talent needs in Michigan’s priority industries, including electric vehicles, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing.

The revamped program reflects MEDC’s commitment to broadening career exposure in fields such as geographic information systems, architectural engineering, and CAD design. It partners with 150 companies this summer, including new contributors like Nexteer Automotive and Magna, as well as smaller firms like Airflow Sciences Corp. and Steelhead Technologies.

Students from 38 Michigan colleges and 26 out-of-state institutions are benefiting from STEAM Ahead internships. Notable examples include:

  • Devonte Coppin, a Michigan State University sophomore, who is working on EV charger projects and warehouse photometric analysis at Colliers Engineering & Design.
  • Nicole Hengesbach, a senior at Michigan State University, is gaining hands-on experience in bridge design.
  • Audrey Huhn, a University of Michigan sophomore, is learning critical software and construction details in her architecture internship.
  • Jason VanVeldhuisen, a Calvin University junior, is exploring highway engineering and other departments through his internship.

The MEDC has increased its financial incentives for the program, now matching up to $4,000 for full-time internships and $2,000 for part-time positions. This change aims to encourage more Michigan businesses to participate and offer valuable work experiences to students.

“STEAM Ahead is creating stronger pathways to 21st-century careers, helping retain young talent, and showcasing Michigan as a hub for a future-ready workforce,” said Kerry Ebersole Singh, MEDC Executive Vice President and Chief of Talent Solutions and Engagement.
