FLINT, MI — Entrepreneurs and small business owners in Flint and Genesee County will soon have access to expanded resources through the newly established Genesee Entrepreneurial Network (GEN), an initiative led by the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance in partnership with local organizations.
GEN aims to streamline support for small businesses by connecting a coalition of nonprofits, municipalities, financial institutions, and universities. These partners will provide guidance on business planning, product development, financing, personal credit, and professional training, often at minimal or no cost.
Karena Hamlet, director of Business Services at the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance, emphasized the network’s goal of bridging gaps in entrepreneurial support. “This group builds on lessons learned over the years and addresses a key need: strengthening that network while connecting service providers directly to those who need their support,” Hamlet said.
The network plans to meet monthly to share insights on local programs, events, and resources, enhancing collaboration among service providers. The focus will be on identifying resource gaps, increasing the visibility of funding opportunities, and linking businesses with potential markets.
A cornerstone of GEN’s offerings is Launchpad, a monthly open consultation session designed to provide business owners with one-on-one support and access to critical resources. The inaugural Launchpad event will be held on Feb. 27, from noon to 3 p.m., at St. Michael’s Conference Center, 609 E. Fifth Ave., Flint.
Attendees at the kick-off event can expect a panel discussion featuring GEN partners, including Metro Community Development and the Small Business Development Corporation. Following the panel, business owners will have opportunities for personalized consultations with GEN’s network of service providers.
The initiative aligns with the Economic Alliance’s Small Business Support Hub, launched in early 2024, by offering additional channels for local entrepreneurs to seek guidance. “Whether you’re just getting started or looking to scale, this network is here to help,” Hamlet added.
Registration for the event is required and available at developflintandgenesee.org/GENKickoff. There is no cost to attend, though space is limited.
