FLINT — Candice Mushatt has secured her position on the Flint City Council for the 7th Ward, according to preliminary results from the Genesee County Clerk’s Office. In the election held on August 6, Mushatt garnered 869 votes, narrowly defeating AnnMarie Arbor, who received 815 votes.

With only two candidates running for the seat, Mushatt will continue to serve the remainder of former council member Allie Herkenroder’s term without the need for a runoff election. Herkenroder resigned from her position in 2023, leading to Mushatt’s temporary appointment by the council last year.

The 7th Ward encompasses the area roughly between Nebraska Avenue to the north, Center Road to the east, Lippincott Boulevard to the south, and Saginaw Street to the west.

In the 1st Ward, voters have set the stage for a November 5 general election by narrowing the candidate field from six to two. Leon El-Alamin and Carol McIntosh will face off after El-Alamin led with 428 votes and McIntosh followed with 305 votes. El-Alamin was appointed to fill the vacancy left by the February death of Eric Mays, who had represented the ward for a decade.

The 1st Ward is bounded by Carpenter Road to the north, Clio Road to the west, Pierson Road to the south, and Saginaw Street to the east.

Other candidates in Ward 1 included Rosemary Morrow with 179 votes, Cynthia Haynes with 132 votes, John Billings with 60 votes, and Liberty C. Bell with 36 votes.
