MICHIGAN — On Tuesday, Jan. 7, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson joined State Representative Amos O’Neal at the Buena Vista Community Center to address post-election issues and share her vision for Michigan’s future. With a focus on proactive leadership, Benson emphasized the importance of action. Today, she took that vision a step further by announcing her candidacy for governor of Michigan.

The announcement comes as Governor Gretchen Whitmer nears the end of her term due to term limits.

“I am running for Governor because our state needs a bold leader who will save all Michiganders time and money, deliver real results that improve everyone’s lives, and protect our residents. And that’s what I’ve done my entire career,” Benson said in her announcement on Wednesday.

Benson highlighted her priorities, which include making Michigan’s government more efficient, supporting businesses and communities, and ensuring access to essential services such as childcare, healthcare, education, and housing.

Since taking office as Secretary of State in 2019, Benson implemented reforms to improve operations at the department, including reducing wait times and installing over 150 self-service stations statewide. She also oversaw two of the state’s highest-turnout elections, emphasizing security and transparency during her tenure.

In addition to her work as Secretary of State, Benson served as dean of Wayne State University Law School at age 35, where she focused on expanding scholarships, freezing tuition, and strengthening the school’s financial foundation.

So far, only a handful of candidates have declared their bids. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has announced his candidacy as an independent, and last week, Republican State Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt joined the race.

Benson’s announcement comes at a critical time for Michigan Democrats. The state flipped to Republican control in the recent presidential election, raising the stakes for the party as it seeks to regain ground in a state that has historically been a key battleground.
